UNCW’s C.J. Gettys intends to play his final season elsewhere

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The UNCW men’s basketball team just finished a record breaking season, but one of the Seahawks tells WWAY that he intends to leave the Seahawk men’s basketball squad.

UNCW red-shirt junior junior C.J. Gettys has one year of eligibility left, but he wants to play his final season of college basketball somewhere else. Gettys is scheduled to graduate from UNCW in July. He’s interested in a handful of schools, including Purdue, a member of the Big Ten.

C.J. Gettys started 16 games his sophomore season. He averaged 4.4 points a game.

He started 15 games this past season. He averaged 5.4 points and 5.1 rebounds per game.

We reached out to UNCW in order to see if C.J. Gettys made a request for a release from the team. Senior Associate Athletic Director Joe Browning said he would have an answer for us on Thursday after checking with UNCW head basketball coach Kevin Keatts.

UNCW tied a school record with its 25-8 record in 2015-16. UNCW lost to Duke in the NCAA Tournament. The Seahawks led the Blue Devils at the break, but the Blue Devils played an outstanding second half to knockout UNCW from the tournament.
