RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — There have been more comings and goings at the North Carolina General Assembly before this year’s work session begins on Monday.
Republican Rep. Jacqueline Schaffer of Charlotte filed her resignation letter Friday after announcing last fall she wouldn’t seek re-election because of increased work back home.
Scott Stone won the Republican primary in March to succeed Schaffer but has a Democratic opponent in November. Stone said Friday he wants Mecklenburg County Republican activists to pick him to fill Schaffer’s unexpired term.
Meanwhile, Gov. Pat McCrory has officially appointed Jay Chaudhuri to finish the term of Democratic Sen. Josh Stein of Raleigh, who resigned last month because he’s running for attorney general. Wake County Democrats last week picked Chaudhuri who won the primary but faces a Republican in November.
