SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — Southport is the home to the North Carolina Maritime Museum.
The museum houses a collection of nautical memorabilia showcasing the history of the Lower Cape Fear.
The museum first opened 28 years ago and is one of three maritime museums in the state.
Some exhibits date back to the 1700s and cover topics like Fort Johnston, Pirates, and the Civil War.
“People are very surprised when they come in,” Museum Manager/Curator Mary Strickland said. “They don’t expect this in a small community. The museum is a result of the people of the area, the Lower Cape Fear, that wanted to show their history and want children to learn about it.”
The museum is currently expanding and all the new exhibits will be open on July 4th.
