Wilmington Stonewall Kickball League is more than just the competition

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — We do more than our fair share of high school sports and college sports on WWAY, but from time to time we like to mix it up to showcase just plain ole’ regular people. We did senior golf recently and dodgeball a while back. It’s now time for kickball. There are a few adult kickball leagues in Wilmington with Stonewall Kickball being one of them. There’s one subtle difference with Stonewall Kickball, but in so many ways, there’s no difference at all with fun and competition being at the forefront. Frank Wolfgram helped get Wilmington Stonewall off the ground. “Stonewall started in D.C. six years ago,” Wolfgram told us on Sunday prior to the league championship game. “North Carolina just kinda blew up. We now have four cities in North Carolina playing in Stonewall. We have the most leagues out of any state right now. Stonewall Kickball started in Wilmington in 2015. We’re in our third season now. Spring last year, fall last year and our spring season this year and so far we’ve collectively raised for different charities and organizations around $10,000.”

Austin Newman is captain of one of the Wilmington Stonewall Kickball teams. “It’s more than just the competition,” Newman said. “Don’t get me wrong the competition is fun, but it’s more about having fun with people you love being around. We want everyone to come out, lesbians, gay, bi, straight, transgender whatever we accept everybody.”
