CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Competitors of all ages took to the sand for the Beach Wrestling National Championships Saturday.

Organizer Ed Duncan said the Carolina Beach event is about having fun.

“A lot of them have age group championships coming up in the next few weeks, so this is kind of a break from the grind of regular wrestling, to get out here on the beach and have a good time,” Duncan said.

Wrestler Ike Okoli has won nationals the past three years while also pocketing a bronze medal in world championships. He said he enjoys the competition along with the climate.

“It’s kind of like a mini vacation and wrestling at the same time so it’s the perfect package,” Okoli said.

That unique combination draws wrestlers like Dominick Kramer all the way from Seattle, Washington.

“We come out here just to enjoy the weather,” Kramer said. “It’s fun and it’s just a week off that we have.”
