NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — NourishNC distributed the first of two “Summer Break Boxes” to 667 New Hanover County children this week.
The free Summer box contains three meals a day, juice, milk, healthy snacks, and fresh produce for hungry children on NourishNC’s Backpack Program.
NourishNC distributed 6,500 pounds of fresh produce with the break box.
“Many of our community’s children rely on free breakfast and lunch provided in school. With school out many of our children will face a continuous battle with hunger this Summer”NourishNC Executive Director, Steve McCrossan said.
NourishNC is a non-profit that provides supplemental food assistance to chronically hungry children in New Hanover county. The mission of NourishNC’s Backpack Program is to provide healthy food to hungry children, empowering them to succeed in the classroom and in their community. NourishNC also serves children over all school breaks by providing them with 3 meals a day, juice, milk, healthy snacks, and fresh produce for Spring, Summer and Fall break.
Officials say on in four children go hungry and more than 50% of the children in New Hanover County Schools qualify for free or reduced lunch.
It costs only $135 to feed a child for the entire summer. Donations are accepted at NourishNC.org
