City announces plans to build new police training facility

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo announced plans Wednesday for the city to build a new indoor police training facility near the Creekwood neighborhood.

“Anything that’s best for the community, we for it, we with it,” said Creekwood resident Glendora Mullins.

During a press conference at Maides Park, Saffo and Police Chief Ralph Evangelous said the new facility will serve as a police substation and indoor shooting range. The facility will go on 46 acres of land, the city agreed to purchase for a little over $1 million, from the Wilmington Housing Authority. Plans are also in place to expand Maides Park.

Wilmington Police Chief Ralph Evangelous said it will benefit the community and law enforcement.

“This is just another layer. Another layer of presence, so we can be part of the community and reach out to the men and women, and families who live out here,” Evangelous said.

Saffo says it will be a few years before the facility is completed.
