BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — This Throwback Thursday we’re looking back at a place many consider to be one of the best surviving representations of antebellum architecture, Orton Plantation.
The plantation house was built in 1735 by Roger Moore, the co-founder of Brunswick Town. It is one of the oldest structures in Brunswick County.
The first home built on the land in 1725 was destroyed in an attack from Native Americans, but the home was rebuilt and the plantation survived. Since then it has been used as a military hospital and served as the home of all sorts of folks from doctors and lawyers to a Colonial governor.
Today the plantation house is privately owned, but the gardens and chapel are popular tourists destinations for folks traveling through Brunswick County.
