Storms cause power outages in Brunswick County

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A couple thousand people lost power tonight in Brunswick County, and they’re still waiting for it to come back on.

The Duke Energy Progress outage map shows about 2,300 customers in Leland, and 700 in Boiling Spring lakes don’t have power. It cut off for customers in Leland around 7:30 p.m., and is expected to come back on around 9:30 p.m. Customers in Boiling Spring Lakes lost their electricity around 5:30 p.m., and there is no estimate right now as to when it might come back on.

WWAY Chief Meteorologist Scott Dean said the severe thunderstorms rolling through the area caused the outages. A Duke Energy Progress spokesman confirmed the power outages were from the storms.

Columbus County dispatchers said the severe thunderstorms knocked down some trees onto roads earlier in the evening. They said fire crews have since cleaned them up.
