Community Boys & Girls Club gets face lift thanks to volunteers

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — There was no lack of hard work and sweat as volunteers donated their time in the heat Saturday to give the outside of the Community Boys & Girls Club on Fanning Street a fresh look.

Volunteers with Support The Port Foundation Inc., Community Boys & Girls Club, and Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity spent the first half of the day picking up trash around the facility.

Support The Port Foundation Founder Cedric Harrison says the property was just a vacant lot before the city gave it to the Boys and Girls Club so before people would walk by and throw trash over the fence.

He said he knew cleaning up the outside would made a big difference and was so glad people showed up to get the job done.

“People say they love the community and they say they want to do things for the community, but when it’s time to show up and show out a lot of people don’t,” Harrison said. “For all these people to come on a day like today, it’s Saturday, it’s scorching hot, it’s early in the morning, is really great.”

Harrison said he wanted to make the outside look good so more kids would want to come and be a part of the programs.
