SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — Sunny Point has a new commander. This morning the Military Ocean Terminal celebrated on the Garrison Lawn at Fort Johnson.
“Personally and professionally there’s a lot going on. This is my last day in uniform,” said former commander Colonel Chris Hart.
After 30 years, Hart is retiring from the United States Army.
“It’s kind of bittersweet. I just want to say that I have so thoroughly enjoyed the last two years,” said Hart.
For two years he was in command of Sunny Point, but today he handed over that duty to Colonel Marc Mueller.
“This is such an honor to become part of this community and be a part of history as this unit takes another step forward in the future of the army,” Mueller said.
Mueller said he is excited about his position as commander of the 569th Transportation Brigade.
“I’m looking forward to making a difference in the lives of my soldiers and civilians, taking care of our workforce, and defending our nation,” Mueller said.
For Hart, hanging up his uniform for the first time in three decades will give him a chance to spend time with family. He said he is confident Sunny Point is in good hands under the command of Colonel Mueller.
