SHALLOTTE, NC (WWAY) —  Nearly 400 students got new backpacks and school supplies Saturday, thanks to The Marie Holmes Foundation.

The foundation was started by Powerball winner Marie Holmes who lives in Shallotte. The event provided free school supplies, food, and fun and games for the kids. Holmes also gave away two $500 checks and multiple gift cards for kids to purchase clothing and shoes for school.

Holmes said there’s a need in the community and she wanted to help out.

“I know it’s a lot of kids out here that don’t have, so to be able to give back to the community, that’s the best part and to see the smiles on the kid’s faces,” she said.

This is the first year of the event but Holmes said she plans to continue it every August.

It’s about time she did something besides bail ol’ Hot Sauce out of jail!

She doesn’t have to do anything for anyone – Including Hot Sauce.
