Veteran coach Ken Cross steps aside; Kenzil McCall takes over East Bladen hoops


ELIZABETHTOWN, NC (WWAY) —  East Bladen head boys basketball coach Ken Cross stepped down earlier this season after five season as head coach of the Eagles. His teams had a winning record his first three years at East Bladen, but the past two seasons were both losing campaigns.

Cross began his coaching career at St.Luke’s in New Jersey in 1968. Seven schools later he moved to North Carolina in 1990 after accepting the head basketball coach position at Tar Heel High School in Bladen County. Tar Heel and Bladenboro High consolidated in 2001 to form West Bladen High School.

Cross was named the West Bladen head coach in 2001. His 2007-2008 West Bladen team won the 2-A state basketball championship. West Bladen had a record of 101-13 during the last four years for Ken Cross.

Bladen County native Kenzil McCall has been named the new boys head basketball coach at East Bladen High. McCall is currently an East Bladen football and baseball assistant coach. He played college baseball at Southeastern Community College. McCall served as the Whiteville head basketball coach for one season several years ago.
