WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The first ever cold storage facility is about to open in the port city.
The Port of Wilmington Cold Storage is located at the port off Shipyard Boulevard.
President Chuck McCarthy said it is going to make things more convenient and cheaper for producers and farmers around North Carolina to store their products and export them.
McCarthy said the facility is more than 100,000 square feet of freezer space. He said they have multiple storage rooms for different temperatures including one that will be kept from zero to -5 degrees. He said all of his employees are given special attire that is fit for -50 degrees.
McCarthy said once they are at full capacity, they will have about 50 employees per shift. He said he will be hiring mostly people without any experience in this industry and then, train them. He said it is going to benefit the economy in several ways.
“Well, I think it will certainly help create jobs here,” McCarthy said. “It will also create jobs indirectly. We are going to be buying things from suppliers around town.”
McCarthy said they have a final inspection from the state Friday. He anticipates opening next week.
