WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Investigators say there could be more victims of a Wilmington insurance agent convicted this week of stealing from her clients.
A jury found Amneris Deleon guilty of embezzlement by an insurance agent and accessing computers to perpetuate a fraudulent scheme, which are both felonies.
Investigators arrested Deleon, who owned and operated ADE Multiservice Insurance, in early 2015. They say she accepted premium payments from the victim for a worker’s compensation policy between September 2012 and the middle of 2013. But she never submitted an application for the policy, yet she kept collecting payments for the policy that never existed. When the victim
started asking why he had not received a refund as his co-workers had, investigators say Deleon created counterfeit documents and a blank money order that was allegedly for this audit refund. According to the DA’s office, she also sent several falsified and counterfeit certificates of insurance to the victim’s employers, claiming he did have a workman’s comp policy even though she insurance, despite the fact that she had never submitted an application for a policy.
Investigators believe Deleon may used the same scheme to rip off other customers who have not been identified. If you think you may be a victim, report it to the NC Department of Insurance Criminal Investigations Unit at (919) 807-6840.
A judge gave Deleon a suspended sentence of 15-36 months, 30 months supervised probation and ordered her to pay restitution to the embezzlement victim. Deleon must also serve 10 days in jail over five consecutive weekends starting tomorrow. She and her business are also not allowed to accept any more money from any customers.
