WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Registration is underway for the 38th Annual Wilmington Family YMCA Triathlon.
The sprint triathlon, which includes a 1,350-yard swim, 11.5-mile bike ride and 5k run, is Saturday, September 17. It starts at the Blockade Runner in Wrightsville Beach with a swim in Banks Channel at 7 a.m.
The bike course takes participants over the Wrightsville Beach drawbridge and uses Oleander Drive, Pine Grove Drive and Greenville Loop Road. The run course utilizes the Wrightsville Beach “loop.”
The YMCA says for most individual categories the cost to register is $65 on or before Wednesday, September 14, and $85 for on-site registration. For Mixed Relay it’s $115 on or before September 14 and $135 for on-site registration. For Aquabike participants the cost to register is $60 on or before September 14 and $80 for on-site registration.
The Y says People as young as 12 and as old as 86 completed the race in 2015. The triathlon is one of 24 races in Setup Events North Carolina Triathlon Series and is one of the largest. The Wilmington Triathlon started in 1979. Its 38th running makes it one of the oldest triathlons in the country.
