WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Catch owner and chef Keith Rhodes has been selected to attend a chef boot camp in Vermont this September.
Rhodes is one of only 14 chefs in the nation to be selected and the only chef in North Carolina to attend the James Beard Foundation’s 10th Annual Chefs Boot Camp for Policy Change.
At the camp, the chefs will learn effective advocacy skills while learning about the many issues surrounding food waste reduction.
Vice President of JBF, Kris Moon, says, “A staggering 40% of food produced in the U.S. goes uneaten each year. Our Foundation believes chefs are important stakeholders in achieving the U.S. government’s goal of 50% reduction of food waste by 2030…”. Moon says they will focus on four key food system issue areas, including food waste reduction, sustainable seafood and fish, sustainable meats, and childhood nutrition.
The camp runs from September 11 to 13 at Shelburne Farms in Burlington, Vermont. This is the Farm’s second time hosting the camp.
The Chefs Boot Camp for Policy and Change was launched in July 2012. Chefs who participate are given training from industry and political experts, including classroom work, mock interviews, and hands on activities.
More than 650 chefs have applied to the program since it’s launch. Participants are selected to represent regional and topic interest diversity.
