WHITEVILLE, NC (WWAY) – The City of Whiteville is asking residents to conserve water after a contractor boring a hole in the water main caused a 12″ water main break.
Water customers of the City of Whiteville Water System in Columbus County are experiencing periods of low pressure and outages in the distribution system because of the break.
Periods of low or no pressure in the distribution system increases the potential for back siphonage and introduction of bacteria into the water system. Therefore, the Division of Water Resources advised that when water is restored consumers boil all water used for human consumption (including drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes and food preparation) or use bottled water.
The city says to vigorously boil water for one minute to kill any disease-causing organisms that may be present in the water.
City of Whiteville crews have worked through the night to repair the leak and the system is building pressure. Due to the volume of water loss, it will take several hours before the system will be fully charged.
Whiteville officials are strongly urging the water consumers to conserve water whenever possible. This advisory effects everyone in the city of Whiteville.
