LAKE WACCAMAW, NC (WWAY) — For this week’s team of the week recipient we do not need a ballot, an election or a poll, but the vote is unanimous. East Columbus has secured their first victory of the season. They’re also this week’s team of the week!
“Oh lord as a batter goes on through life, as a batter goes on through life.” East Columbus head football coach Maurice Huey chanted earlier this week. “All we ask is for the field to be fair.” The field was indeed fair last week when East Columbus faced arch-rival West Columbus in a matchup of winless teams. For Donavan Worley the taste of a 20-14 victory could not be any sweeter. “We finally did it,” Worley told WWAY. “We hadn’t done it in a long time and we came together as a family and accomplished one goal and it felt great.”
Maurice Huey is the East Columbus head football coach. It’s his first year leading the the Gators at the swamp in Lake Waccamaw and he got a little wet after the win over West Columbus. “The guys got me with the water,” Huey told WWAY. “They got my offensive coordinator as well. We always preach will and want to. Our guys have been showing a lot of effort all year.” “We’re the best kept secret in Columbus County,” Dexter McKoy said. “Nobody comes to the swamp to check on us or anything. The team is young and we’re getting better and better.”
There you have it. It’s a tight group. It’s a spiritual group. East Columbus is this week’s WWAY-Farm Bureau Insurance Team of the Week.
