Pirates improve to 2-0; Elijah Wilson and Chanticleers drop to 0-2

CONWAY, S.C. (AP) – Jarrell Brantley scored 15 points on 5 of 7 shooting to help lead the College of Charleston to a 71-64 win over Coastal Carolina on Monday night.

Charleston has won back-to-back games to open its season while Coastal Carolina has dropped two straight.

Joe Chealey finished with 14 points and Marquise Pointer added 10 with five rebounds for the Cougars, who hit 21 of 23 free throws and finished with a plus-13 (21-8) scoring advantage at the line.

Elijah Wilson led all scorers with 16 points for Coastal Carolina. Jaylen Shaw added 11 for the Chanticleers.

Charleston led virtually the entire night, but a Wilson jumper cut the Cougars lead to 52-51 midway through the second half. However Charleston immediately responded with an 11-0 run, capped by a Chevez Goodwin dunk, for a 63-51 lead.

The Chanticleers clawed back to within three in the final minute, but Brantley hit a pair at the line to ice it.

GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) – B.J. Tyson had 13 points, five assists, and four rebounds while Caleb White scored 13 points to lead Eastern Carolina to a 61-51 win over North Carolina A&T on Monday night.

Sam Hunt’s opening 3-pointer provided the Aggies with their lone lead of the game. White buried a 3 33 seconds later, sparking a 23-6 run. Tyson, who was 3 of 12 from the floor, capped the run with four free throws. He made all six of his free throws for the Pirates (2-0), who were 19 of 29 from the line. The Aggies (1-1) were 10 of 16.

Hunt buried another 3 to reduce the Aggies’ deficit to 26-17 with 4:42 before halftime, but East Carolina outscored North Carolina A&T 9-5 before the break and led by 13.

Hunt led the Aggies with 17 points on 5 for 10 shooting and had five assists.

ELON, N.C. (AP) – Hudson Price made all four of his 3-pointers and scored 23 points, Jon Davis added three 3s and 22 points, and Charlotte beat Elon 100-95 on Monday night.

Charlotte (2-0) scored 101 points in its season-opening victory last Friday.

Steven Santa Ana gave Elon its largest lead of the second half, 73-67, with 10:19 remaining, but Charlotte scored the next eight points to take a 75-73 lead. Elon never led again.

Price hit a 3-pointer with 5:32 remaining for an eight-point lead and after Elon pulled to 91-89, Davis sank two free throws and Price made another 3-pointer with 39 seconds left for a 96-89 lead.

Anthony Vanhook had 16 points and eight rebounds for Charlotte (2-0), while Braxton Ogbueze added 10 points. The 49ers hit 10 of 14 3-pointers.

Santa Ana made five 3-pointers and scored a career-best 32 points for Elon (1-1), which was 9 of 26 from distance. Karolis Kundrotas added 16 points, and Brian Dawkins and Tyler Seibring had 10 points apiece.
