Ashley’s Adventures: Wilmington Ice House

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) – While the Cape Fear might not see a white Christmas, you can still have a little winter fun this holiday season.

Offering opportunities to skate and play hockey, The Wilmington Ice House is open all year round.

Don’t know how to skate? No problem.

You can either hit the ice on your own or take advantage of The Ice House’s skating lessons.

“You want to keep your feet together and take small steps on the ice,” said Karen Butler, The Ice House’s figure skating director.

You’ll also want to make sure you’re wearing the correct skates.

“You want to take the advice of the individuals at skate rental, because they’re generally going to give you skate a little bit smaller than you think you need,” Butler recommended. “That’s because when you skate, you really want the boot to fit as closely as possible. You also want to tie up your skate really tightly.”

You’ll need more than the correct skates. You’ll also want to have the right clothes.

“You put the layers on so that as you move around and your body warms up, you can take your jacket off, but you still have other things on,” Bulter said. “And you definitely want the gloves because almost everybody falls down.”
