RALEIGH, NC (AP) – One of the most powerful positions in the North Carolina Senate is going to a coastal legislator previously involved in tax and transportation issues.

Republican Sen. Bill Rabon of Southport is the next chairman of the Senate Rules Committee, which manages the flow of legislation through chamber committees and to the floor.

Senate leader Phil Berger made the announcement Tuesday, a week before the General Assembly is to reconvene for a special session to consider recovery funds for Hurricane Matthew and mountain wildfires. The next regular session begins in January.

Rabon is a veterinarian first elected to the legislature in 2010. He’s recently been serving as co-chairman of the Senate Finance Committee.

Rabon is succeeding Tom Apodaca of Hendersonville as rules chairman. Apodaca resigned from the Senate in July.
