MANTEO, NC (AP) — A former cheerleading and gymnastics coach from Kill Devil Hills has pleaded guilty to four counts of taking indecent liberties with a minor.

District Attorney Andrew Womble tells the Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk, Virginia, (http://bit.ly/2hiMWDA) that Russell Scherer was sentenced to an active maximum sentence of 32 months for one count of indecent liberties.

Womble says Scherer was given a suspended sentence for each of the other counts. The district attorney says Scherer faces supervised probation for three years when his active sentence ends.

Investigators said when Scherer was arrested in September 2015 that he had operated or worked at several cheerleading businesses or sports clubs in Fletcher, Jarvisburg, Kill Devil Hills, Manteo and Nags Head.
