WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It’s something you don’t see every day. It’s a NCAA Men’s Basketball National Champion trophy, and it’s right here in Wilmington.
This trophy is one of five NCAA trophies traveling around the country to promote March Madness.
The trophy made its way around the UNCW campus on Wednesday, but there is still time to get your picture with the National Champion trophy at Thursday night’s UNCW Men’s Basketball game against William & Mary.
Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. at Trask Colesium for fans to take pictures with the trophy. The basketball game starts at 7 p.m.
When asked if he hoped the trophy would be a good luck charm for the team, UNCW Athletic Director Joe Browning said, “Well, we’re 15-2, so we don’t need a lot of good luck charms to have a great season, but certainly anytime you can get the NCAA trophy and have your photo taken with it is a special occasion.”
The university plans to take pictures of the trophy at other locations around Wilmington like the Seahawk statue, the U.S.S. North Carolina and the beach.
The NCAA will make a collage of all the places the trophies have been at the end of the year.
