LELAND, NC (WWAY) — Competition led to a gas war in Brunswick County over the weekend, and drivers loved it.
A Harris Teeter gas station opened a few weeks ago in a shopping center in Leland across US 17 from a Murphy USA. As part of its grand opening, Harris Teeter offered a 20-cent discount with your VIC card, so the price was $1.88/gallon of unleaded.
In response Murphy USA dropped its unleaded price to match. That led to the stations going back and forth until the price got down to a $1.28/gallon.
This caused people from all over to line up to get the cheap gas.
“I think it’s a good idea, you can’t get anything else cheap,” Mary Simpson of Riegelwood said. “So I got the gas cheap.”
While the price war seems to have eased up today down to $1.88 at both locations, it forced people to direct traffic because of the long lines of cars.
