UNCW celebrates sixth annual breaking down the Wall of Hate

WILMINGTON, N.C (WWAY) — Breaking down the Wall of Hate. That’s what happened at UNCW today.

They started with the negative to create a positive. This week, blank walls were put up on campus. Students wrote negative messages on one and positive messages on another.

After the students finished writing the messages on the Wall of Hate and the Wall of Hope, they gathered at the UNCW amphitheater at noon.

They took a sledgehammer to the wall of hate and wrote more messages on the Wall of Hope.

“Students like that ability to physically let their anger out, be able to show the campus what it is that’s upsetting us as a student body or us as a people,” Guiliana Vaca-Tricceri, SGA Director of Multicultural Affairs said.

The student government association says the point of the event is to bring difficult topics out in the open, and to present transparency for all these negative and positive messages.
