WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The 7th Annual Swing into Spring Tournament was held at Empie Park in Wilmington Saturday.
It was warm and sunny for a day filled with tennis and fellowship. The tournament was to open to all children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
Each athlete was paired with a volunteer and played tennis doubles. Organizers said more than 25 athletes participated.
Abilities Tennis of North Carolina Executive Director Lou Welch said this is one of five tournaments that are put on by the organization in the state.
“It’s families coming together,” Welch said. “They all have children with intellectual disabilities and it’s almost like a time to get together and talk and encourage one another.”
Members of the UNCW Men’s Tennis team were there to help keep score.
Every Thursday there is a free tennis clinic for any skill level from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Empie Park.
