WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) – Myrtle Grove Middle School triumphed in UNCW’s 8th Annual Black History Quiz Bowl this year, ultimately taking home a first-place trophy, according to a news release from New Hanover County Schools.
The students faced off against teams from Myrtle Grove, Noble, Williston and Virgo Middle Schools on the topics of African American achievement in science, politics, entertainment and more.
The team’s members were Mehki Tims, Sa’quan Gordon, Mikenzie Wallace, Aaliyah Chasten, and Janae Woodard. They were coached by Social Studies teacher Daniel Perry.
Williston Middle School, coached by Kirk Ohler, placed second, while Noble Middle School, coached by Lissa McIver, placed third. DC Virgo finished fourth place and was coached by Matilda Scott.
The event was sponsored by the UNCW Upperman African American Cultural Center, UNCW Black Student Union, UNCW National Panhellenic Council, and the Juneteenth Committee of Wilmington, NC, Inc.
It is designed to promote friendly competition among students as well as knowledge of African American history.
