WILMINGTON, N.C (WWAY) — A local coffee shop is partnering with the Special Olympics to end the use of the word “retarded”.
Bitty and Beau’s, a local business which employs adults with mental and intellectual disabilities, says that the world “retarded” is offensive and derogatory. The coffee shop is holding a “Spread the Word to End the Word” event today to raise awareness.
“I truly believe it is important to educate people on why not to use it and why not to make it a continued trend, because it’s a negative word, and it has a negative influence and a negative energy,” said Bitty and Beau’s cashier Jesse Guillaume.
Interested participants can stop by the coffee shop from now until 5 pm and make the pledge to end the word by signing their banner.
The company has recently announced that it will be expanding to a new location. It has asked community members to vote to determine what that location will be.
