WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — After nearly 10 years, a Wilmington mother is still hopeful police will find her son’s killer.

Samantha Smith is speaking out for her son Ronald Conyers Jr. who was murdered in 2007.

“Ronald was Very funny,” Smith said. “Loved people. Loved to laugh. ”

On March 31 2007, Wilmington Police found Conyers shot to death in an alley near 16th and Nun Streets just a few blocks from where he lived. Smith remembers it like it was yesterday.

“The day before you would have never thought that the next day would have been like that,” Smith said. “We were all together laughing.”

Smith said they were even joking about death that day.

“Like he said, ‘When you die, I’m going to bury you in the backyard with some wood from Lowes,'” Smith said. “And I was like, I knew it was going to be cheap. And so then, I said, ‘But when you die, you’re going to have this top of the line funeral. It’s going to be this and that,’ and the very next day, he was gone.”

Ever since that day, Smith has been looking for answers.

“Just waiting for someone to come forward,” Smith said.

In 2008, police told us they got a lead and were talking to three people who may have known something. Now, 10 years later, still no arrest.

“It’s discouraging,” Smith said. “Disheartening.”

As year after year passed, Smith never lost sight of hope.

“After 10 years, you have moments, but Closure is needed,” Smith said.

Smith said she is not going to stop looking for the answers she needs, and the justice her son deserves.

A spokeswoman with the Wilmington Police Department said Conyers’ murder is being treated as a cold case. She said they review those cases a few times a year for any updates.
