“Not an upset” per CAA Commissioner if UNCW beats Virginia in NCAA’s

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — “I don’t know right now if I would call it an upset.” That’s what CAA Commissioner Joe D’Antonio told WWAY after finding out UNCW will play Virginia in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. Virginia will be the 5 seed. UNCW is the 12 seed in the East Regional game to be played in Orlando, Florida on Thursday. “I think it’s two really good teams. One will come out victorious. I certainly like UNCW’s chances, they’ve had a great season. They’re a special team with a special coach and hopefully destiny is on their side right now.”

Tony Bennett is the UVA head coach. They too are in the midst of a special season. “The team we’re playing, this is the second year in a row for them with good experience returning. We know what’s waiting for us and it’s exciting.”

This is the third season at UNCW for head coach Kevin Keatts. It’s three regular season CAA titles and two trips to the Big Dance in a short amount of time and that’s awfully impressive. “It’s not like we’re having a rematch with Duke,” Keatts said. “It’s not like we’re playing Duke again and you say they beat us and we have the opportunity to play. We’re playing a different program a different style and we’ve got a good opportunity”

Seahawk Nation may not be able to handle it if UNCW manages to beat Virginia. We’ll worry about that if and when it happens. The winner on Thursday in Orlando will face the Florida-East Tennessee winner on Saturday in the second round of the tournament.
