WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Bitty and Beau’s Coffee in Wilmington is celebrating World Down Syndrome Day today.
The popular coffee shop employs people with development and intellectual disabilities. Today, it held a dance party to recognize all 12 of its employees with Down Syndrome.
Each of their employees with Down Syndrome was introduced to music. The owners and managers then took a moment to tell guests who each of them are and what they are known for at the shop. That ranged from great dance moves, to great hugs, to great coffee makers.
Owner Ben Wright said today is all about them.
“We really wanted to single them out today and let them know how much we think about them and how capable we think they are and how glad we are that they are willing to work here and just show the world that people with Down Syndrome can work,” Wright said.
Ben and his wife Amy both said they hope one day this concept is not such a novelty and more just the norm in society.
