WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It was all about basketball skills at UNCW’s Trask Coliseum today for the Special Olympics of New Hanover County.
Three hundred Special Olympics athletes participated in the annual event put on by the Special Olympics of New Hanover County.
Volunteer Coach Kera Koenig said it is all about teaching the athletes new skills while also learning social skills. She said the best part of the day is interacting with the athletes.
“To watch them score their first or make that pass that they’ve not made before,” Koenig said. “Those types of things you just, you see that smile and you’re like, ‘yes!’ That’s what it’s all about is seeing that smile and them light up and it’s like that’s what you’ve been driving for.”
This is one of many events Special Olympics puts on in New Hanover County every year.
Koenig also said they are always looking for volunteers and coaches. Click here to see how you can become a volunteer, a coach or an athlete.
