TOPSAIL BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Topsail Island is a popular tourist destination, but did you know a few decades ago it was used for a secret military operation?
From 1946-1948 the U.S. Navy built and tested missiles on the island. It was called Operation Bumblebee.
The assembly building, which still stands, has since been transformed into Missiles and More Museum.
The museum not only features exhibits on Operation Bumblebee, but several military programs, including the first pilots in the United States Air Force.
While there you’ll also learn about the pirates rumored to have visited the island.
You can also see artifacts left behind by Native Americans.
