WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Cape Fear Housing Coalition is working to create more access and awareness about affordable housing in Wilmington.

Today, the housing coalition hosted the ninth Solution Series with their partners at Trillium, Fair Housing Project, SocialServe.com, and the City of Wilmington to discuss the resources and concerns about affordable housing in the community.

Cape Fear Housing Coalition Director Paul D’Angelo said the goal was to explain current housing laws and give landlords and tenants information about all of the resources out there for them. There were representatives there to help those looking for affording housing or even employment.

D’Angelo said a key part of the discussion is knowing the laws out there that protect both parties.

“There are some serious issues out there when it comes to renting to a tenant, just to make sure you are following the law, that you’re not discriminating for one reason or another, whether people have kids, young children, neighborhoods, ethnicity, household make up,” D’Angelo said.

Executive Director of Socialserve.com, Tara Peele, said they match people to housing units all over North Carolina. She said they help landlords list housing for free and find good renters. She said they also help renters find housing for free on NChousingsearch.org.

Peele said their company based in Charlotte is a second chance employer. She said they employ people regardless of criminal background.

“We believe that shouldn’t be a barrier to employment,” Peele said.

D’Angelo said the next event will be in September. He said it is going to be a fun, unique event called ‘The Real Households of New Hanover County.’ He said they will showcase eight different houses around the city and base it off the popular TV show about real housewives.

D’Angelo said more details about the event are going to be set in the next week.
