WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — In a matter of days CB McGrath will be introduced to “Seahawk Nation” as the new UNCW head basketball coach, but in a way he already has some Wilmington ties. The UNCW board of Trustees approved McGrath Monday morning.
C.B. McGrath is no stranger to the Port City. He used to have relatives in Wilmington. His sister-in-law is Jenny Garrity. She used to be the UNCW head women’s tennis coach. The Garrity family (husband Jimmy used to be an assistant basketball coacha at UNCW) left Wilmington a few years ago, but there are others around our area that also know C.B. McGrath. This includes Atlantic Packaging owner Rusty Carter. “I believe it is a loss for the Tar Heel coaching bench for sure,” Carter told WWAY from Phoenix on Monday. “I would think the “Seahawk Nation” would be delighted for sure to have someone of CB’s intellect, character and work ethic. I think he is a great choice. I would add Wilmington is gaining a wonderful family with the McGraths and their three kids. C.B. is a great family man.”
Wilmington optometrist Chris Glendenning also knows C.B. McGrath. “It’s been close to 20 years that I’ve known him,’ Glendennning told WWAY on Monday. “He’s an in-law of a good friend of mine. Met actually on a trip out to Kansas. First thing people should know about C.B. McGrath is really looking forward to coming here and he really, really wants this position. He’s an individual that you’re going to find as patient, very loyal. He is a basketball junkie and he’s been part of two of the greatest storied programs in our country and he’ll bring that information and that knowledge with him to UNCW.”
