Canines for Service gets help to support Veterans program

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Canines for Service of Wilmington has been awarded a $25,000 grant investment from the Petco Foundation to support its Canines for Veterans program.

“Our veterans have given so much for our country to defend our freedom and rights,” said Rick Hairston, President and CEO.  “They deserve the best trained service dogs available to give them back their independence. Thank you to the Petco Foundation for being a part of making that possible.”

WWAY recently honored Hairston as an Extraordinary Person of the Week for the 20 year milestone the organization has reached.

The grant is through the Petco Foundation’s annual Helping Heroes fundraising campaign, in partnership with Natural Balance Pet Foods. During the month of October, customers are invited to donate online and in Petco stores across the country to support the life-changing work of service, therapy and working animals.

The Petco Foundation investment will help to continue the efforts to train shelter dogs and partner highly skilled service dog with veterans with service-connected disabilities.
