UNCW students hold public forum about trolling

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — You’ve probably seen or maybe even been a victim of trolling on the internet.

A group of UNCW students were assigned to learn more about this topic and hold a public forum to bring awareness about the good and the bad.

Professor Chadwick Roberts assigned his Introduction to New and Converging Media class to dive into the understanding of trolling including how it came about.

The goal was to start a conversation with community members and to research a new media behavior.

“It’s a community forum basically to inform adults, law enforcement, different people of what is going on with the younger generation and how they are acting on the internet whether it is in a bad way or good way,” student Jordan Behan said.

As a part of the project, students read “This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things” by Whitney Phillips.

Roberts says 4chan, Reddit and Yik Yak are the most popular sites for trolls while social media outlets are less.
