SUNSET BEACH, NC (WWAY) — In Sunset Beach you’ll find a mailbox full of secrets. People place them there willingly.
Nearly 40 years ago, Frank Nesmith and his then girlfriend came up with the Kindred Spirit Mailbox
Located on the southern end of the island, it’s a simple mailbox, full of pens and notebooks.
“It was suggested because of the location, people could sit and think about pleasant things, or unpleasant things, and write down memories, or apologies or whatever,” said Robert Forrester, the mayor of Sunset Beach.
Over the years, ten of thousands of visitors have filled countless notebooks with their thoughts, wishes and confessions.
Getting to the mailbox, however, is half the fun.
“That’s a long hike for a mailbox. It is surprising that people think that much of it that they’ll take the effort and spend the time,” said Mayor Forrester.
You can get to the mailbox by boat or by foot.
If you’re walking, the easiest way to get there is to park at the 40th Street beach access. From there it’s a 1.5 mile walk along the beach.
You’ll find the mailbox and a bench nestled in the dunes.
Once the notebooks are full, they’re replaced with fresh ones and shipped off to be archived at UNCW.
