NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — It is a gesture to help fight a growing crisis. The New Hanover County Board of Commissioners accepted a donation Monday afternoon aimed at reducing opioid overdoses across the Cape Fear.
The county received $98,000 from Kaleo Pharmaceuticals for Evzio which is an injectable Naloxone. Naloxone is the drug is used to help revive people who have overdosed on opioids.
It is a donation Commissioner Jonathan Barfield says is much needed as Wilmington is rated the number one city for opioid abuse in the country.
Commissioner Barfield adds the company is not from the area, but what it is doing with this kind of donation is honorable.
“Again for me it’s lifesaving. It’s changing lives. It’s giving a person a second chance to things to get things right. Recognizing there are so many people are addicted to opioids. Whether that’s heroin or prescription medication,” Barfield said.
Barfield says with the donation the county will be able to buy 200 Naloxone kits for emergency responders.
