WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — One lucky teenager won the golden ticket of the Wells Fargo Championship. A 16-year-old year from the First Tee Program had a pretty good day because he got to play a whole round of golf with three-time Masters champion, Phil Mickelson.
16-year-old Gerry Jones Jr. won Wells Fargo’s 2017 Succeeding Together essay contest. Director of Player Services, Gwen Crow says the First Tee Program teaches kids core values along with golf.
Crow says Jones even has a three handicap, so he is a pretty good golfer. Crow says a panel of judges picked his essay on the First Tee Program as the winner. “They had to write about, I think it’s about their mentors and who they look up to and in the core values of the program and how it has helped them.”
Crow says last night Jones actually got the opportunity to pick who he wanted to play with today, and that was Phil Mickelson.
