WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Do you have some shoes that you no longer wear? Want to help two great causes while giving yourself more room in the closet? There is a shoe collection drive underway that is a win-win here and overseas.
The Friends School of Wilmington PTO is collecting gently-used or new shoes through August 15th. Their goal is to collect 7500 shoes(300 bags of 25 pairs of shoes). They’ll turn them over after the 90 day drive to the group Funds2Orgs who will then give the school money based on the weight of all the shoes. A portion of the proceeds raised from the shoe drive will help fund the 7th and 8th grade Dominican Republic 2017 Service Learning and Language Immersion Trip.
Amy Andrews, co-president of the Parent Teacher Organization, says it is much more than a fundraiser. “The mission at our school is to teach children to serve others, have empathy, and give back to their community,” Anderews said. “So when they can collect shoes and donate them, that’s part of our learning process at Friends School.”
Funds2Orgs will the distribute the collected shoes through their network of microenterprise partners in developing nations.
You can drop off the gently-used or new shoes at the Friends School of Wilmington Pine Grove Campus, Peiffer Campus, Fleet Feet Sports Wilmington and New Balance Mayfaire. The PTO is also looking for more drop off locations. If you would like to be one, contact the school here or email the PTO with your information.
