CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Wrestlers of all ages from across the country took their turn in the sandy ring Saturday afternoon competing in the US Beach and Belt Wrestling National Championships.
Aside from fun in the sun and friendly competition, some wrestlers qualified to represent the United States overseas this summer.
It is a sport that continues to grow, and one that Carolina Beach has hosted for the past six years.
“Every year we get more participants, more interests,” USA Wrestling Director of Communications, Gary Abbott said. “It’s really developed a real strong following. And you know, it’s the right kind of community for a beach tournament. You’ve got a beautiful beach. You’ve got people here that know how to have fun and are very welcoming of people coming in.”
There were more than 200 athletes that competed in the tournament, making it the largest event USA Wrestling has ever held on a national level.
