SURF CITY, NC (WWAY) — If you have been to Surf City over the past several months you have seen the work being done on the Topsail Island Bridge replacement.
NCDOT Residential Engineer Trevor Carroll says construction is on schedule.
It will be a fixed span bridge. It will be a two lane bridge along with a 10 foot multi-use lane, a bike path, and a emergency lane.
“It will make access on and off the island a lot simpler,” Surf City Tourism Director Allan Libby said. “There will roundabout ties in on both sides which was a recommendation from town locals here. They asked for that to kind of keep traffic moving.”
Carroll says the main reason for traffic now is that bridge swings open every hour.
Crews are currently working on building the sub structure and foundation.
If all goes as planned, the expected date for drivers to start using the bridge is September 2019. The final completion date of the whole project will be late 2020.
