WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — UNCW paired up with the Wilmington Rotary Club and U.S Citizenship and Immigration services to celebrate 37 new citizens of the United States of America.

“It’s amazing to be a part of this nation, so I am very happy,” new citizen of America, Jiessenia Quesinberry said.

Quesinberry is excited to officially become a U.S citizen after living in America for the past 12 years.
She is from Chile and said her favorite thing about America is how kind people are.

“I love to go everywhere, ya know you get to travel more, but I am so ready to vote,” Quesinberry said.

Franklin Etarock, who is from Cameroon said he is also excited to vote.

“Today is a very excellent day for me, for my family and I am very happy to be an American citizen right now. It’s been a long journey and I am happy that my family has been supportive to me throughout this process,” Etarock said.

The new citizens came from all over the world.

Twenty different countries like Mexico, India, South Korea and Jamaica.

UNCWs Chancellor Zito Sartarelli was the keynote speaker. Sartarelli is someone who knows exactly what this moment feels like.

“I am excited to hear from Chancellor Sartarelli because he is a naturalized citizen himself from Brazil,” Mike Beadoin, president of the Wilmington Rotary said.

Overall the new citizens are looking forward to what is next.

“I am happy for this opportunity and I look forward to becoming a meaningful citizen,” said Etarock.

UNCW was proud to welcome the new citizens and after the ceremony everyone celebrated together.
