WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — For the past four or five years, Oakdale Cemetery has honored Flag Day by giving the community a place to properly dispose of their American flags.
On Wednesday, June 14th, a Flag Retirement Ceremony was held where about a hundred flags were burned in a respectful manner. Most of the flags had seen their wear and tear after being proudly flown by community members.
“It’s something that we do annually here on Flag Day,” Oakdale Superintendent Eric Kozen said. “There aren’t a lot of organizations that actually do flag retirements so we offer it to the community abroad to provide their flags to us for proper retirement.”
Members of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Sons of the American Revolution took part as well as the Boy Scouts of America Troop 232. A special demonstration on how to properly fold the American flag also took place.
