WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The NBA Draft is just about a week away. Today former Laney Buccaneer Elijah Wilson hit the hardwood in Charlotte to work out for the Hornets in the attempt to make his dream a reality.
“It’s all a good group of guys and we all worked our hardest and left everything out there,” Wilson said. “I wish I would’ve hit a couple more shots though but for the most part I think I did pretty good and left it all on the floor.”
The Spectrum Center is just over 150 miles from where Elijah Wilson played his college ball at Coastal Carolina University and just over 200 miles from his high school gym. For these reasons, he had plenty of motivation when he hit the court to workout for the Charlotte Hornets.
“I think it would be really great,” Wilson said. “It would be great for me and my family and friends and stuff like that. It’s not that far of a trip so they’d be able to catch a game at any time.”
Location is not the only connection that wilson has to the Hornets. Wilson and a member of the Hornets organization share a scoring record at Laney High School. That person is the owner of the Hornets Michael Jordan.
“He’s all over the place at Laney, in the hallways and in the gym,” Wilson said. “Words can’t explain it. Whenever you can be mentioned in the same sentence with the greatest ever in the game, it’s something that you have to enjoy and be proud of.”
In order to be not only be mentioned in the same sentence, but be mentioned on the same team, Wilson needs to continue to work. luckily he has the right mindset to help him get to the next level.
“You need to always strive for the best, with life in general,” Wilson said. “That’s what I try to do. If I fall short at least I can say I went down fighting for it.”
