Team of the Week: Ashley starts year off 1-0

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Screaming Eagle fans, you better believe it. Your team is the Team of the Week for week one.

In the opening game of the regular season, Ashley started the year off on the right note with a 38-6 victory over Southern Wayne.

“We didn’t really have a good first half and we weren’t playing like a team,” Ashley running back Freddie Thames said. “After halftime, coach really gave it to us and we knew we had to come out in the second half ready to fight.”

The defense had to come out to fight as well, Ashley’s D carried a big load in this game by only allowing one score the entire contest. But the unit added a score of their own when Elijah Robinson took an interception to the house in the third quarter. He says this team can continue to do big things this season.

“We just all have to stay at it and stay aggressive and everyone on the team has to want it,” Ashley linebacker Elijah Robinson said. “We’ve all been together since last year, we had a lot of juniors on the team last year. So we kind of played together and we’re starting to click.”

A 1-0 start is a huge momentum booster for this team, but Coach Jeff Turner wants them to stay focused so they can turn 1-0 to 2-0.

“It was sort of a must win first game of the season, especially being at home,” Turner said. “So it was really good, it was good for the kids, and now it just brings us to the next challenge of Friday night.”

The Ashley Screaming Eagles will be home again Friday night and you can see their highlights and all other football action Friday night at 11 on the Fifth Quarter.

Congratulations once again Ashley.
