KURE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Last week, we brought you a story about a beach erosion problem in Surf City, partially caused by our recent coastal storm. Another local beach has its own erosion to worry about and there is an impasse between the town and the property the erosion affects.
The area in front of Ocean Dunes at Fort Fisher in Kure Beach is prone to erosion due to how the beach formed, according to North Carolina Sea Grant. It does not retain sand well.
The Army Corps Of Engineers has a contract with Kure Beach to replace sand lost by storms every three years.
However, the Ocean Dunes complex historically has not received any of that sand.
We reached out to the town of Kure Beach and representatives from Ocean Dunes at Fort Fisher. Neither side wanted to talk on camera.
We’ll continue to investigate this story as it develops.
