SURF CITY, NC (WWAY) — Cleaning up the beach is a priority for some Surf City residents.
This Saturday was the first annual Topsail Island beach sweep.
The Topsail Island Longboard Association started organizing beach clean up fifteen weeks ago, doing one mile of the beach several times each week.
This weekend was a celebration of the past clean ups, while also doing a full island beach sweep, all twenty-six miles of it.
The organizer Cory Sydes said it’s important to keep the beach clean.
“We get five or six pound bags of trash, three of four buckets, it really just depends. We usually get a lot of trash on Mondays, the weekenders are here and then ya know not that they trash it, but ya know a lot of things get left behind and we as locals and we as the community it’s our responsibility, ” Sydes said.
Sydes said he would like to do this again every year after the Labor Day weekend to make sure the beach is ready for the winter season.
He also likes to do this as thank you to the island and Town of Surf City.
